There’s a new little baby cousin out on the west coast, so I headed over to San Francisco last week to introduce myself to Patrick Onslo Wessel (POW).
OK, baby POW may not have been the only reason I headed west. There are also cousins and aunts and colorful row houses and hilly walks and tasty food and fog and a bridge that’s mighty fine for strolling on…
Oh, and there are donuts. And when there are donuts, you’re gonna want to take a donut walk. Last spring we did our first donut walk in Brooklyn and Manhattan, so I was well prepared for the San Francisco edition.
Benny’s donuts were your classic, but delicious donut. No crazy exotic flavors here—just rainbow sprinkles, please. We managed to limit ourselves to four. In the beginning we were so hungry that Jackie almost ordered a bagel too, but the key is really to pace yourself.
Then we took a walk through Golden Gate Park before heading to the second location. From the observation deck, we took in the views of the park and the city. Still feeling the sugar rush, we stopped to swing dance on the street. POW was loving it and laughing the whole time. Note his face below when we stopped dancing. Case in point. But you can’t dance the day away when there are more donuts to be eaten. The next stop, HeartBaker, had amazing donuts that were still piping hot: lemon, vanilla and chocolate. Of course, next up was some more walking—yet again, through a gorgeous park. Our final stop: Dynamo Donut. We figured the main location in the Mission would be crowded on a beautiful Sunday afternoon, but thankfully there is a little off-shoot location right on the dock. Here the flavors were more trendy: passionfruit with chocolate nibs, spiced chocolate, and apricot cardamon. And the views were lovely indeed.
A bit more walking and a few hamburgers later, POW, ever so virtuous, redeemed our day of gluttony and ate pureed avocado for dinner. And took a bath. And went to bed.
More from the trip in San Francisco to come…
